Room 308, Thursday Afternoon: Packing For a Trip Home

Rikku was packing. A little slowly, as she was still a touch sore from her morning's exercise, but the opportunity had been too much fun to pass up.

Luckily you didn't need much for a week in Spira. She had her Godhand and her explosives, and new armor. Jude already had his. Pops was due in any time now, and she'd remembered to thank Jarod with cookies last night. They could leave after Jude finished his shift at Luke's. As near as she could tell, they'd be on Besaid Island sometime Friday morning.

Back to Spira. She couldn't imagine Yunie's face. She still wasn't sure what all of this might have cost, though. She placed a nervous call and hoped everything was okay with Dawn. Still wondering how she'd missed whatever it was that had attacked them.

Until then: packing.

Dawn knocked on the door, feeling particularly relaxed and bouncy.

Rikku hopped to the door. "Oh! Dawn! Come in!" She almost went for a hug and didn't, slightly unsure of where things stood. "Don't mind the mess, trying to pack."

"You're not leaving, are you?" Dawn asked, looking around.

"Ship gets in tonight!" Rikku said with a grin, and then understood what Dawn had meant. "Oh! Just for a week, for break! I'll be back."

"Oh, good! You're taking Tidus home, then?" Dawn asked eagerly, sitting down in a clean spot on the floor, "And you'll be taking lots of pictures of he and Yuna together so I can finally see who you've been talking about?"

Rikku bounced a little. "You bet! She doesn't even know yet. We're getting there tomorrow morning and, uh." She blushed. "Jude's coming along, too."

She stopped and sat down across from Dawn, fussing with her hair a little. "Uh, and I'm really sorry about ... whatever it was that happened. I had no idea it was going to ... I mean, none of us did, I guess. But as soon as he showed up I stopped paying attention and I stopped thinking and I know better. I mean, I should, by now."

"Phsst," Dawn waved her hand, "No biggie. It wouldn't be me if someone wasn't attacking. And nothing did attack--it was just me, not knowing that something that made it possible for me to help with the portal was gonna also make me want to stay in the portal. Nothing you could have done--or not done," she emphasized, "would have made that part turn out differently. But Sam was there, and that was enough."

"You're taking Jude to meet your family?" Dawn grinned, "Good time for it, when you're returning Tidus."

Cid pounded on the door.

"GIRL! This your room? You in there?"

Rikku jumped suddenly. "Pops!" She answered the door and gave him a quick, bouncy hug. "You're here! Did you get in okay? Where's Brother?"

Cid scooped her up in a big hug and squeezed her. "Oh, yeah, we got in JUST fine." He rubbed his temples with a pained expression. "If that damn fool brother of yours has any SENSE, he's fixin' the damage he did to your docks. But it's him, so he's probably posing in front of a mirror or somethin'."

Rikku giggled and squeezed back. "Did he break anything important? You really think he can find a mirror? I'd imagine he's yelling for someone else to find one and bring it to him, and not using the right words."

She looked around her room. "I started grabbing things I'd need and then I started reorganizing and then everything blew up."

"Hey, don't you talk about your brother that way. He's a moron, but it's not nice of you to call him one." He thumped her on the shoulder. "Get packing. We've got a long trip ahead of us."

Rikku rolled her eyes. "You call him worse all the time. You call me worse, too." And looked around again nervously. "Well, we can't leave just yet anyway. We have, uh, passengers that aren't ... ready just yet."

Hermione's been doing most of her studying away, trying to give Rikku time to pack, but after a while she has to bring things back so she can pack herself.

"How is it going?" she asks, putting her books immediately in her trunk, since they'll end up in there anyway.

"Hermione!" Rikku bounced and waved to her roommate. "Oh! I meant to help you study more and I've been ... I'm so sorry!"

She flailed a bit. "I just need to go home and I'm starting to reorganize and it's a mess, I'm sorry. And Tidus is up napping in Jude's room and we can't go until Jude gets back and you don't think Pops is gonna freak out, do you? 'Cause I hope not and I can't believe all this is happening and I think I need way more sleep 'cause I haven't been getting much."

She took a deep breath. "Whoa. Sorry. Uh. How are you? How's the cramming and all that? When do you head back?"

"Definitely get some rest," Hermione says. "At least a bit. And I leave first thing in the morning. It won't even be light out yet. By my estimations I should get there Friday evening Hogwarts time, but I'm not sure what time it will be here yet. I've given myself enough time that there's no possible way I can miss any exams, though." The dork.

Rikku smiled. "Thanks. I'm gonna sleep on the ship. We leave in a couple hours and it's gonna take until morning to get home, so I might just zonk the whole way." She shook her head. "It's hard to sleep 'cause none of this seems real and I'm scared he's gonna vanish or something. I don't think I'm gonna be able to relax until we get to Besaid."

She sat down on the edge of her bed. "Good luck with your exams. And, uh, are we still gonna be rooming together this summer and all that? Dawn mentioned cabins and that's kinda weird, but ... it's, uh, been really nice rooming with you, if we're not. And thanks for not freaking out about ... uh ..." She considered the list, which was long. "All of it? But especially the temporary boyfriend-cat and the reality-hole and me being crazy, which is kinda constant."

"You'd be surprised what I'm used to," she says with a smile. "And I'd really like to still room together, if you would."

Rikku laughed. "Wow, that Lavender and Parvati must've been pretty bad! Constant pranks? Insane girliness?" And her eyes lit up at the latter bit. "Oh! I would, too, if you would! I mean, that'd be great! And thank you again for the help studying! And I'll try to keep my bolts and bits to my side of the room more, I promise."

Stretching his arms over his head, Tidus yawned the last of his nap away as he went downstairs and walked up the hallway, wondering when they were going to get picked up today. It was Thursday, wasn't it?

He knocked on 308, hoping he'd remembered the right door as well, and waiting, running a hand through his already sleep-mussed hair.

Rikku bit her lip and reached for the door handle. "We're waiting," she continued saying to her Pops, "for our other passenger."

She pulled the door open, hoping there was a sleepy-headed blitzball player standing on the other side.

"Now, wait just a minute! You just said there was only -- " Cid stopped and stared.

And looked at Rikku.

And stared.

Tidus blinked tiredly and sniffled, rubbing at his eye like a toddler. "Hey Cid! Didn't know you were gonna be here already."

Cid spluttered. "What the hell? How the hell? What in tarnation is going on here?!?"

Rikku bit her lip and smiled nervously at her father. "Vydran? You ... you remember Tidus. He's ... he's back. Yeah?"
